What to Do When Someone Dies

You have experienced a death. This is one of life’s most difficult things to deal with, so it is important to get help about what to do and when to do it. Here is a list of the key things that need to be done. Not everything can be done immediately. However, there is an important sequence of events that needs to happen, alongside a whole range of options that are down to the preferences of the deceased and their family, friends and loved ones.

Key things you need to do as soon as practically possible:-

  • Call the family Doctor in order to obtain a death certificate

  • Contact all the close relatives and let them know

  • If the person is an organ donor, inform the Doctor immediately

  • Find out if the person had any last wishes or burial instructions

  • Register the death.

  • Make sure that everyone else who needs to know is told.

  • Agree with the family if there will be a Wake and if so, where and when?

  • Start arranging the funeral.

  • Collect all the documents and information you will need.

  • Contact and meet with the deceased person’s solicitor and read the will as soon as possible. This may be important if the deceased has specific or special funeral requests.
